Madonna di Gallana Church

This church is located about 5 km from the city, along the ancient route of the Via Appia. Probably the church was already present during the late antique period, inside engraved on a wall was found an ancient Roman game. In the medieval period, the sources mention the house where the church as Gallano. The church stories blend between history and legend. A legend says that the church was founded by the Galerana wife of Charlemagne and consecrated by as many as 22 bishops including St. Turpin. The feature of the church is the presence of two aligned domes, element that places the building in the early medieval period. It has interesting frescoes, including a Deesis depicting Christ Pantocrator on the dome of the apse, and an Annunciation, probably part of a cycle of frescoes on the Madonna.
