Saint Mary in the Temple church

Among the many churches scattered in the city center, we remember that of St. Mary in the Temple. Some traditions want the foundation of the Templar Order, given the name of the little church; which may be true since it is likely that here in Oria there was a garrison of Templars. There are reports of Santa Maria of the Temple Church in 1542 on the occasion of a marriage celebrated in it. May still be, the synagogue of the wealthy Jewish community of Oria, which in the sixteenth century dealt mainly of loan interest to capital. Diocesan information date back to the seventeenth century, when it is remembered with the title of “Ecclesia Sanctae Mariae of the Temple” in the book of pastoral visits.
