Another important cave church is the Madonna della Scala; early medieval settlement (long before the year 1000) is situated 3 km from Oria on the old road to Manduria area of an old rock house which belonged to the Basilian monastery of Sant’Ustino (St. Augustine or St. Justin) . The dating here is uncertain but some elements bring back the sacred building to the XIII-XIV century. Inside there are frescoes of the Apocalypse and the locally made painting of the Madonna della Scala.
