The mummies under the Basilica
Underneath oria cathedral we find the mummies cript, the only case of mummifications of secular. According to local tradition the crypt was built around 1484 and was a place of prayer for everyone that hasn’t come back from the battle with the Turkish.(1480-1481). The body that was to become mummified had his brain aspire from its nostril, they replaces the organs with a combination of dehydration salt, the body was the put in a tub which contains the same substances that were put in its body. In order for the full dehydration to happen the body remain in this tub for a long period of time, from 1 to 2 years. After the body was completely dehydrated it was pull out the tub, with the presence of two family member, it was cleaned and dressed and put inside one of the sections.
